Which IRCC-approved language test is easiest?

There is no universally easier test — each one rewards different skills. Test-takers comfortable with computer-delivered formats and Canadian English often prefer CELPIP; those used to British English and paper-based formats often prefer IELTS. Can I mix English and French test results in one Express Entry profile?

Yes. You can submit one English test and one French test in the same profile, and IRCC will use both for CRS scoring. Scoring at least CLB 7 in English and NCLC 7 in French also unlocks the bilingualism bonus — up to 50 additional CRS points.

How long are test scores valid for IRCC?

Language test results are valid for two years from the test date. Your results must still be valid on the day you submit your PR application — not just on the day you create your Express Entry profile. Plan your retake calendar backwards from the expected application date.

Can I retake just one section if I am unhappy with it?

Accepted Answer

Not usually. IELTS offers a One Skill Retake for computer-delivered sittings in select markets, including Canada. CELPIP, TEF Canada, and TCF Canada currently require retaking the entire test. Check the provider's current policy before booking a partial retake.

Does IRCC accept home-proctored or online-at-home test scores?

Accepted Answer

No. IRCC requires tests taken in secure test-centre conditions. IELTS Online and similar home-proctored versions are not accepted for Express Entry. Book an in-person or centre-based computer-delivered sitting.

What is the difference between CLB and NCLC?

CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks) is the English-language scale. NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens) is the French-language scale. The two scales are numerically identical — CLB 9 and NCLC 9 represent the same level of proficiency in their respective language — but each test converts to the scale matching its language.

Do both spouses need to submit language tests?

The principal applicant must submit a valid test. Submitting a spouse's test is optional but can increase the CRS score, because CLB 5 or higher in at least one ability earns additional points. If you are applying alone or the spouse is not coming to Canada, only the principal applicant's test is required.

How do I submit my test results to IRCC?

Enter the test reference number and ability-level scores directly into your Express Entry profile. IRCC will cross-check against the test provider's database — do not upload PDFs or scanned reports in place of the reference number. Keep the paper certificate for the final PR application.
