Which tests IRCC accepts (and which are commonly confused)

  • IELTS Academic — IELTS Academic is for university admissions. Use IELTS General Training for Express Entry instead — your Academic scores are valid for UK/US university applications but IRCC will not accept them for permanent residence programs.
  • CELPIP-General LS — CELPIP-General LS covers only Listening and Speaking and is accepted for Canadian citizenship — not for Express Entry. For permanent residence you need the full CELPIP-General (all four abilities).
  • PTE Academic — PTE Academic is for study, not immigration. Only PTE Core is IRCC-approved. The two tests have different scoring and different test-day content — verify you are registering for PTE Core.
  • TOEFL iBT — IRCC accepted TOEFL iBT for a short window but dropped it in 2019. If you have only a TOEFL result, you will need to rewrite with IELTS, CELPIP, or PTE Core before submitting an Express Entry profile.
