How long is the Quebec undertaking for a spouse or partner?

Three years, on Quebec's own schedule rather than the federal one. You cannot end an undertaking once the sponsored person holds permanent residence, and it binds for its full term regardless of circumstances, a separation or divorce included. A dependent child accompanying your spouse carries a term of their own, set by that child's age.

How long is it for parents and grandparents?

Ten years in Quebec, shorter than the 20-year federal commitment, and the same term whether you sponsor a mother, father, grandmother or grandfather. A dependent child accompanying them again carries a term of their own, set by that child's age.

How long is it for a dependent child?

It varies with the child's age at the time you sponsor, unlike the flat spousal and parental terms. Under 16, the term is the longer of ten years or the run to age 18, so a six-year-old carries twelve years. Do I need a Quebec Selection Certificate (CSQ) for family sponsorship?

Yes. When the sponsor lives in Quebec, MIFI selects the sponsored family member through a CSQ before IRCC reviews the federal permanent residence application. The Quebec sponsorship undertaking is signed with MIFI and is independent from the federal undertaking signed with IRCC. Both layers apply.

What are the Quebec residency conditions for sponsors?

The sponsor must be domiciled in Quebec at the time the application is filed and must intend to remain in Quebec. MIFI also assesses the sponsor's financial capacity against the Quebec scale, which uses different income thresholds than the federal Low Income Cut-Off (LICO).
