FAQ
Can I apply for a CUSMA work permit at the border?
US citizens can apply at a Canadian port of entry (airport, land border, or pre-clearance) for same-day processing. Bring your US passport, employment letter, proof of credentials, and the $230 CAD fee — there is no LMIA fee since CUSMA is LMIA-exempt. Mexican citizens must apply in advance through a Canadian visa office, with processing typically taking 4 to 12 weeks — they cannot apply at the border.
What if my profession is not on the CUSMA list?
CUSMA professional work permits are limited to the 63 occupations listed in Chapter 16 / Appendix 2 of the agreement — similar but unlisted professions do not qualify. If your profession is not listed, consider other LMIA-exempt pathways (Intra-Company Transfer, CETA for EU citizens, CPTPP for eligible countries) or LMIA-based permits where the employer obtains an LMIA. Use the Work Permit Eligibility Checker for a full assessment.
Do I need a specific degree for a CUSMA work permit?
Each CUSMA profession has defined minimum credentials. Most require a bachelor's degree or higher in the relevant field. Some professions accept a professional license or certification in lieu of a degree, and a few (like management consultants) accept a combination of education and experience. The checker shows the specific requirements for your matched profession.
How long can I work in Canada under CUSMA?
Each CUSMA work permit is valid for up to 3 years. There is no limit on the number of renewals, so you can work in Canada indefinitely as long as you continue to meet the requirements (eligible profession, valid credentials, job offer from a Canadian employer). Each renewal requires a new application.
How does this calculator work?
Enter your profession name or 5-digit NOC 2021 code — the checker searches the 63 CUSMA-listed professions using partial name matching and NOC code lookup. Select your nationality (only US and Mexican citizens are eligible) and indicate whether you hold the minimum required credential. It then shows matching professions with their credential requirements, an eligibility determination, and the application process, fees, and required documentation specific to your citizenship.
