BOWP Eligibility Canada 2026

Check Bridging Open Work Permit eligibility while your PR application is processing. Covers EE programs, PNP, QSW, and implied-status rules.

FAQ

Can I apply for a BOWP if my PR application is through a Regional Economic Immigration Program?

Most regional pilots (Atlantic Immigration Program, Rural Community Immigration Pilot, Francophone Pilot) are not currently eligible for BOWP. Eligible programs are explicitly listed in IRCC operational manuals — Express Entry programs (CEC, FSW, FST), enhanced and base PNP, QSW, Agri-Food Pilot, and CAIPP. Base PNP applicants need provincial nomination approval, and QSW applicants need CSQ approval.

What if my work permit has already expired?

If your work permit expired and you did not file a timely extension, you lost your legal status. You must restore your status within 90 days (before applying for a BOWP) and stop working immediately. Working on an expired permit is unlawful. If you filed a timely extension before expiry, you are on implied status and can continue working under the same conditions while IRCC processes your application.

Does BOWP let me work for any employer?

Yes, with limited exceptions. BOWP is an open work permit, so you can generally work for any Canadian employer, and you can change employers freely without notifying IRCC. Some regulated occupations (healthcare, childcare, agriculture in specific roles) require employer-specific authorizations or medical exams that may limit your options. Once issued, a BOWP is valid for up to 24 months or until a decision is made on your PR application, whichever comes first.

Can my spouse get a work permit while I hold a BOWP?

Yes. As a BOWP holder, your spouse or common-law partner can typically apply for a Spousal Open Work Permit (SOWP). Note that eligibility for SOWPs was tightened in 2024 — generally requires the primary holder to be in a TEER 0-3 occupation.

How does this calculator work?

The checker confirms you are physically in Canada, then evaluates the PR program you applied under — Express Entry (CEC/FSW/FST), enhanced PNP, base PNP, QSW, Agri-Food Pilot, or CAIPP — since BOWPs are available only to applicants of these programs. It checks whether IRCC has issued your Acknowledgement of Receipt (AOR), which most BOWP applicants need before applying, and for base PNP or QSW it confirms provincial nomination or CSQ approval. From your current work permit expiry date it calculates days-until-expiry and flags the 4-month application window or implied status. A refused PR application disqualifies you from BOWP.
